My husband and I love to play board games and cards, and if you do too, this is a must have game! We think of it as a mix between Risk and SimCity. It is a wonderful family game too b/c our 9 year old son can play with us using the basic tiles, but then adults that start to master the basic set can keep adding addition sets to lengthen and add difficulty to the game.
Very fun game – one I would highly recommend. Just buy the bigbox now so youdont waste the money buying it later after you get addicted to the base game.
I learned to play Carcassonne this past summer in the middle of the woods in Spain, and since then I’ve been hooked. It incorporates traditional aspects of strategy a lá Risk, Stratego, etc., but because of the piece-by-piece process of building the puzzle-like board, there is a degree of spontaneity and flow those games lack. It is thoroughly enjoyable whether played with 2 or 5 players, and the additional expansions (most of which come in the Carcassonne Big Box at a great price) bring entirely new dynamics to the game that can make it anew for even a long time player. Of all the great boardgames I’ve played in my lifetime, I can’t think of any other that allows as much player interaction as Carcassonne, and you can usually play a game in 30-60 minutes as long as all players know the rules.

Through their selection of cards to buy, and how they play their hands as they draw them, the players construct their deck on the fly, striving for the most efficient path to the precious victory points by game end.
Dominion Reviews:

I bought this a couple months ago, thinking it might be a good game to play with my wife. She and I have very different tastes in games (she likes word games, I like strategy games), but this sort of was meeting in the middle.
My wife was a little put off by the game at first, thinking it was some sort of war game (the official description sure does not help here). Once she realized it was just an interactive card game, she has taken to it so well that she ends of winning most of the time.
Since then, we have played this game for hours, including staying up to 3 am on weeknights. We took it with us on family vacations and introduced it to family young and old. Everyone has liked it, although some have been a little intimidated at first.
It is a great game and well worth the purchase.
And I am not kidding. Thank goodness for the reviews on youtube.
Every Christmas my wife and I always look to buy a new game. And since our daughter is now 7, we’re looking for good family games. I read a great review of Dominion in the SF Chronicle and thought this would be a good family Christmas gift. Maybe we were exhausted on Christmas Day – I don’t know. But I couldn’t make heads or tales out of the instructions.
However, once my daughter and I sort of figured out what was going on, we played our first game – and loved it. In fact, she whooped me that first game. Once it dawns on you that all you are doing is “building a deck” then everything else is east. As it is, this is a perfect family game. My daughter actually taught my wife the game, and now the three of us are playing it nonstop.
While I am not a consumer of “euro-card” games, this one is a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.

You are a monarch, like your parents before you, a ruler of a small pleasant kingdom of rivers and evergreens. Unlike your parents, however, you have hopes and dreams! You want a bigger and more pleasant kingdom, with more rivers and a wider variety of trees. You want a Dominion! You will bring civilization to these people, uniting them under your banner. Dominion: Intrigue adds rules for playing with up to 8 players at two tables or for playing a single game with up to 6 players. This game adds 25 new Kingdom cards and a complete set of Treasure and Victory cards. The game can be played alone by players experienced in Dominion or with the basic game of Dominion.

Dominion Intrigue Reviews:

I was very surprised to find that I liked playing Dominion as much as I do. I am not a big card game kind of person.
Dominion is probably the best card game (but it doesn’t SEEM like a card game when you play it) that I have ever played. It has the feel more of a board game, but you aren’t moving pieces around a board.
Dominion intrigue has actually improved on this by introducing new cards that have the ability to be useful not only in the current round, but in the next round as well.
I bought this game for my daughter’s boyfriend who fell in love with Dominion the fist time he played it. Now with him having this newer version he can borrow my copy of Dominion and have even more choices in setting up games.
If you don’t own Dominion yet you can choose between Dominion Intrigue or the original Dominion. I would say the more you play the game the more you would want Dominion Intrigue. If you only play every now and then Dominion (orignial) would probably be a better choice.
Either way you can’t go wrong.
One word of caution however…. There is a new expansion out called Dominion Seaside. It is a great EXPANSION.. but not a standalone game. You NEED either Dominion or Dominion Intrigue to play Dominion Seaside. I have played Dominion Seaside expansion once and loved it. But remember you need Dominion or Dominion Intrigue to play Dominion Seaside.
